Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then found many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police state early analysis suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in association with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.
An important political figure stated the incident rendered him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
